Lake Grassmere is situated between the townships of Seddon and Ward in
the sunny province of Marlborough which is located in the top of the South Island of New
Zealand.
Lake Grassmere formed as a shallow bay in the Ward depression 1800
years ago. It has since become enclosed by gravel moving northwards along the coast.
The 1750ha lake has no rivers flowing into it, receives a rainfall of
around 600mm per year. Today the lake is subdivided into a series of ponds with gates
allowing sea water in and out. The frequent hot summer nor'westerly winds dries out the
lake thereby increasing the salinity, making Lake Grassmere ideal for natural salt
production, and subsequently for Cyst production. Other by products include gypsum and
caustic soda. |
